Storm Surge Website

  22/05/2012
Coastal floods are often the greatest threat to life and property during storms. Floods damage roads and bridges, destroy homes and businesses, and cause injuries and death to those in harm's way. NOAA's new website, www.stormsurge.noaa.gov, provides vital information to help protect people and property.

NOAA provides you with the information you need to plan and prepare for storm surge events. Meteorologists and oceanographers constantly monitor coastal conditions and predict when events could occur. NOAA issues forecasts and warnings so you can respond to flooding from a storm.

Coastal floods are caused by storm surge, which is the rise in water level caused by forces generated from a severe storm's wind, waves and pressure. Storm surge can flood large coastal areas, reaching cities and communities miles inland.

The website explains what causes coastal flooding and how it could affect people and businesses, aiming to contribute to preparation.

Demo of RIEGL Airborne Bathy Scanner in Camcopter UAV

It's not an AUV but a UAV. So an unmanned vehicle, but in the air instead of underwater. This movie shows a demonstration of the bathymetric laser scanning capabilities of the RIEGL VQ-820-GU hydrographic airborne sensor in reality. For more information on the technical side, please see the news release on Hydro International.
