86 ADCPs for Ocean Observatory Initiative12/07/2012 |
| Teledyne RD Instruments (TRDI) has been awarded a contract from the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, with funding from the National Science Foundation, to provide up to 86 Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) Instruments as a component of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The OOI, a project funded by the NSF, is planned as a networked infrastructure of science-driven sensor systems to measure the physical, chemical, geological and biological variables in the ocean and seafloor. |
|
As a fully integrated system, OOI will collect and disseminate data on coastal, regional and global scales. Through a unique cyber infrastructure, OOI enables anyone with an internet connection to access ocean observing data. Greater knowledge of the ocean’s interrelated systems is vital for increased understanding of their effects on biodiversity, climate change, ocean and coastal ecosystems, environmental health and climate.
In support of this programme, TRDI has been selected to deliver its Workhorse Monitor/Sentinel (300/600 kHz), Long Ranger (75 khz) and QuarterMaster (150 kHz) ADCPs to provide highly precise ocean current speed and direction data to the OOI network. Teledyne RDI’s ADCPs can measure up to 128 data points, thus providing an accurate representation of currents throughout the water column.
The University of Washington has placed the first order for ADCPs in support of this programme, with delivery scheduled for August 2012.

Demo of RIEGL Airborne Bathy Scanner in Camcopter UAV |
It's not an AUV but an UAV. So an unmanned vehicle, but in the air instead of underwater. This movie shows a demonstration of the bathymetric laser scanning capabilities of the RIEGL VQ-820-GU hydrographic airborne sensor in reality. For more information on the technical side, please see the news release on Hydro International.
