Aberdeen Harbour to Widen and Deepen Port Entrance

  18/07/2012
Aberdeen Harbour Board, UK, has awarded a GBP5.2m contract involving major improvements to the port entrance and for widening and deepening the navigation channel. The contract, awarded to the Westminster Dredging Company,UK, will involve a combination of dredging techniques and has been commissioned to ensure the harbour continues to meet the needs of future users, with larger vessels now becoming an increasingly regular fixture at the port.

Harbour Board Chief Executive, Colin Parker, said that the works should enable the harbour to be involved in new markets such as offshore wind turbine deployment.  The deeper entrance to the port should also assist in addressing the occasional disruption to traffic movements during periods of easterly gales.

The design, nature and timing of the works have evolved in full consultation with a wide cross-section of stakeholder groups to minimise potential disruption and the project has been licensed by Marine Scotland.

The project has now commenced with an anticipated completion by early October 2012.

Demo of RIEGL Airborne Bathy Scanner in Camcopter UAV

It's not an AUV but an UAV. So an unmanned vehicle, but in the air instead of underwater. This movie shows a demonstration of the bathymetric laser scanning capabilities of the RIEGL VQ-820-GU hydrographic airborne sensor in reality. For more information on the technical side, please see the news release on Hydro International.
