Australian Antarctic Division (AAD)
The AAD recently reported the status of tide gauges at Macquarie Island and in their Antarctic Stations.
Macquarie Island: Type Aquatrak & Druik under fibreglass domes with access to sea, via an inclined borehole. Operational since December 1994 and in March 2003 linked by radio connection to Headquarters in Kingston, Tasmania.
Casey: Type Platypus Pressure installed in a 600-kilogram concrete block in about 6 metres of water. First gauge destroyed by small iceberg but current gauge has been operational since 1996. Last data download January 2003. It is hoped to install an Aquatrak gauge summer 2004/5 in the new wharf.
Davis: Type Platypus Pressure firstly established in March 1993 but replaced in May 2002. Last data download November 2002.
Zhongshan: Joint project with the Chinese Antarctic Research Expeditions. Type Platypus Pressure. Last downloaded January 2003.
Mawson: (1). Type Platypus Pressure installed May 1992, retrieved and re-deployed March 1993. Replacement second gauge deployed November 1999, last downloaded January 2003. (2).Type shore-mounted Aquatrak & Druik installed in a stainless steel thermos flask with heat trace, inclined drill hole providing a water temperature maintained above freezing point in winter. The installation has both power and communications so that download of data from Headquarters in Kingston, Tasmania, is possible. Note that during the 2003/4 summer there may have been subsequent downloads of which the author is not aware at some of the stations.
