Hydrographic Society Benelux
News
On Friday 12th September the Hydrographic Society Benelux held a workshop titled ‘Renewable Energy and Hydrography’ at the Hogeschool Rijswijk. The workshop was well attended; the ninety participants just about filled the lecture hall. After the opening by chairman-of-the-day Sjoerd van den Brom, Hydrografic Society Benelux Chairman Rob Luijnenburg informed the members present on current Society matters, in particular the in-progress founding of The Federation of Hydrographic Societies. After this, Mr Fred Gardner from Teamwork Technologies delivered the first presentation, the Archimedes Wave Swing, a device to generate electricity from wave energy. Next, Mr Huub den Rooijen, Vice-President of Shell wind technology presented the Shell view on renewable energy, and wind energy in particular.
After the coffee-break Mr Kees Hulsbergen - who stood in for Rob Steijn from Alkyon - explained to the audience about generating electricity from tidal differences, with details of a conceptual plan (waterlelie) for a generation plant in the IJsselmeer in The Netherlands. The last presentation was by Mr Fred Zoller and two of his students from the faculty of Durable Technology of the Hogeschool Rijswijk, our host for the day. Mr Zoller explained about the faculty and the social aspects of durable technology, while his students talked about the ambitious plan to build a real wind turbine park consisting of four full-size turbines.
To end the afternoon, Mr Johan Stam, chairman of the Educational Fund committee, presented the annual award for the best thesis to students Wout Velthoven and Luc Boheme the mentor of Mr Jan Lavrijsen, who was not able to come in person. Mr Velthoven and Mr Lavrijsen share First Price this year.
Mr VelthovenÕs thesis covered Lidar technology for Rijkswaterstaat while Mr Lavrijsen described the CARIS-hips and sips 5.2 software package, as in use with Hydrografiesche dienst Ostende.
