It has been decided to postpone the Annual General Meeting of the Hydrographic Society of South Africa (HSSA) until after the end of the financial year (February 2003). This will allow some time to prepare an audited review of the financial standing of the Society, as well as provide members with more time to consider their nominations for their new committee. A number of shortcomings in the existing HSSA Constitution have been identified and it has been generally agreed that the Constitution needs revision and modernisation, this not having taken place since its inception in 1974. After the election of new office bearers a Special General Meeting will be called to provide proposed amendments to the now out-of-date Constitution. Our November meeting saw a double bill presentation to members that took us from the depths of the ocean to outer space.
John Macleod brought us up to speed on the latest underwater positioning technologies, to be launched from Sonardyne in the first quarter of the new year and Kobus Olkers (a private consultant to the armaments industry) took us to the other extreme, providing a very technical and well illustrated presentation on space weather and its effects on everyday electronics.
2002 has seen a huge revival in the HSSA and we hope to continue this trend into the new year. The Society will take a break over the December month and reconvene for monthly meetings starting in January 2003. International, as well as local, visitors to Cape Town are very welcome to contact us on the details below and join us for our informal end of month get-togethers.
We trust all our members and the international hydrographic community had a festive Christmas and Happy New Year and are looking forward to the challenges of 2003.
