Hydrographic Society Russia

News
In April this year the Hydro-graphic Society of Russia celebrated its tenth anniversary. The Society was established in 1992 by a group of 23 hydrographers from different Russian organisations (as at that time there were no commercial companies) as a voluntary public union of citizens, the principal purpose of which is assistance in the development of scientific and practical hydrography and as an aid to its members in raising their professional level.
Now the HSR numbers more than 200 members. Among them there are 17 doctors of science, 21 professors, 27 candidates of science, 2 members of the Academy of Science and 7 members of other Academies. Side by side with scientists and admirals, there are students of the Naval Institute, officers and employees of state organisations and commercial enterprises, individuals from
Sankt-Petersburg, Moscow, Murmansk, Vladivostok, Sevastopol, Kaliningrad et al.
The President of HSR is now Professor, Doctor Nikolay N. Neronov. The Secretary is Mr Viktor G. Rybine.
The HSR holds regular annual meetings, conferences on different themes of theory and practice of hydrography and ‘round tables’ dedicated to famous Russian hydrographers. About important events the Council of HSR informs its members by newsletters. The HSR is cofounder of the journal ‘Navigation and Hydrography’ which is edited by the State Navigation and Hydrography Research institute of the Defence Ministry of the Russian Federation.
In order to stimulate enthusiasm for studying hydrography and hydro-meteorology in the naval and marine institutes, two diplomas in the name of prominent Russian scientists in the field of marine sciences, were established by HSR. They are: ‘Professor A. P. Belobrov diploma’ (for hydrographers) and ‘Professor V. A. Snejinsky diploma’ (for hydro-meteorologists).
This year two graduates of the Hydrographic faculty of the Sankt-Petersburg Naval Institute: Boris N. Pegushin (Russia) and Aili Karim (People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria) were awarded ‘Professor A. P. Belobrov diplomas’. On the 22nd of June, during the ceremony of graduation of the Sankt-Petersburg Naval Institute, these diplomas were presented by President of HSR Nikolay N. Neronov.
