Hydrographic Faculty Jubilee
Hydrographic faculty cadets, teachers, commanders, graduates of different years, and veterans gathered on Saturday 3rd December in the Hall of Revolution of the St. Petersburg Naval Institute. Among them there were many the HSR members; not surprising, as the majority of Society members are graduates of this faculty. It should be noted that training of naval hydrographers began in 1920, when in the higher naval school named Frunze the hydrographic section was created. In 85 years of existence, this organisation and its name have changed more than once. At one time it was even allocated a separate educational institution. However, all eventually found its place and now the faculty successfully continues to prepare naval hydrographers in the ancient building of the Naval school on quay of the river Neva in Saint Petersburg. Windows at the front of the building face the monument to outstanding Russian seafarer I. Kruzenstern. The Course in Hydrography taught at the St. Petersburg Naval Institute (Naval Academy in FIG/IHO documents) is included in the Current Register of FIG/IHO Recognised Courses (The Hydrographic Journal No. 118 October 2005, p. 41).

Celebrations began by bringing in the honorary faculty standard. The faculty chief captain of the 1st rank Gennady Berezhnoj gave the report, before several orders were read out. This was followed be some presentations and monetary premiums handed out to the best cadets and officers. Representatives of the Russian Hydrographic service, the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy and other organisations offered congratulations, and HSR President Nikolay Neronov handed a congratulatory address to the chief of faculty on behalf of the Hydrographic Society, Russia.

Salutatory speeches alternated with amateur performances on the part of cadet participants and professional actors. After the official part of the occasion, a reception was held for invited persons.
