In the third week of March, the entire marine world will be gathering in London, as this is where the biannual Oceanology International event is taking place. The exhibition and the conference bring together technological and scientific developments. With over 550 exhibitors and a state of the art conference programme OI12 is definitely the place to be. OI12 will be held from 13 to 15 March at the ExCel Exhibition and Conference Centre in Londonfs Docklands. The organisers are expecting at least 7,000 visitors to attend. Hydro international will of course be present. We not only have a stand (No. A325), but we will also have a team present at the exhibition and conference. GEM Elettronica is exhibiting at OI for the first time with its Polaris fibre optic gyrocompasses FOG-100 and FOG-200. These highly accurate AHRS (attitude and heading reference system) sensors, designed and produced entirely by GEM Elettronica, are being used in a number of roles such as in hydrographic survey vessels where roll, pitch and heave corrections need to be applied to MBES (multi- beam echo sounder) readings. GEM Elettronica, a privately-owned company situated in central Italy, also produces radar and other electronic systems for ship navigation.

GEMS is pleased to announce the recent formation of GEMS Marine, a division of GEMS International Group of Companies. The purpose of GEMS Marine is to provide centralised management of the company’s vessels and assets.
The Division is based at GEMS’ head office in Darlington in the North East of the UK and runs a maintenance and logistics facility at its quayside Marine Base in Middlesbrough.

With pride Geo Plus is introducing her newest flagship of the fleet, the Geo Focus . Our 7th multipurpose survey vessel will be available from mid May 2012. This new 35m survey and ROV support vessel is built under Lloyds’ regulations. Due to diesel/electric propulsion, the Geo Focus gets a Green Passport. Sailing in hybrid mode, the vessel reaches a maximum speed of 9 knots (diesel: 18 knots), which results in a fuel saving of approximately 75%.
The Geo Focus (DP-1 class) is fully equipped with, among other, the newest multi-beam echo sounder Kongsberg EM2040 (hull-mounted transducers) and a retractable HiPap 501 for USBL-positioning. Furthermore, the survey room has a panorama view of the deck and its environment. On board, high standard accommodation for 18 persons is provided. The vessel is designed to operate worldwide in both tropical and artic circumstances.

Geomarine Ltd is a subsea geotechnical specialist providing a range of ROV deployed geotechnical survey tools and engineering services. Geomarine will be demonstrating one of their unique "geoROV" CPT systems. This tool turns almost any ROV of opportunity into a geotechnical testing vehicle. See attached photograph. Based on the Geometrics GeoEel Solid streamer, the P-Cable system provides exceptional results at relatively low cost. Last December, the P-Cable system was used to map the Shoreline Fault off the coast of California to evaluate the safety of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant prior to the renewal of the plant’s operating licences.

Ifremer, the French research institute for exploitation of the sea, will be exhibiting again at the Oceanology International in the French Pavilion.
This year, we shall be presenting Ifremer’s:

This year, Oceanology will host Haliotis, Ifremer’s recent oceanographic launch, length 10 metres, dedicated to acoustic imagery/bathymetry. This vessel is specially designed to map the nature and morphology of the seabed in very shallow waters (water depth between 1 and 20 metres). Thanks to a semi-articulated truck equipped with a mounted crane, it is easy to deploy Haliotis everywhere (sea, estuary, lake, river). On Thursday 15 March, Oceanology International will be welcoming students, graduates and postgraduates to Careers day at the show. Kongsberg Maritime will focus on the core product areas of underwater sensors, positioning and remote and autonomous vehicles at Oceanology. Marine Electronics Limited will be introducing an advanced new tool for hydrographic surveyors at Oceanology with the launch of its WideView 3D interferometric side-scan sonar. This compact new system provides cutting edge technology that will prove invaluable to surveyors using AUVs, towfish and surface remote controlled vehicles to obtain precise bathymetric data in difficult shallow-water conditions. 3D interferometry is at the forefront of sonar technology and has the potential to offer significant operational cost savings by obtaining a wide swath of data in a single pass. Norcom Technology, a Norwich (UK) based company specialising in marine navigation software, celebrated its 25th Birthday on 9 December 2011.
Norcom provides systems to companies working in the oil and gas industry as well as the offshore renewable energy market and is currently working on a project monitoring anchor catenaries on a barge laying a 48" gas pipeline in the Baltic from Russia to Germany.
Norcom works closely with International Hydrographic Offices and other organisations to provide up to date electronic navigational information including, charts, wrecks, pipelines and subsea cables.
Over the years Norcom has been involved in projects such as positioning the Second Severn River Crossing, laying subsea telephone cables, installing offshore wind farms, moving oil rigs, laying pipelines, hydrographic surveys and controlling remote operated vehicles (ROVs).

Nortek have launched a Scour Monitor for offshore wind farms, jack-up rigs, jetty walls and underwater pier foundations.
The instrument comprises four downward looking narrow acoustic beams, which continuously monitor the seabed profile. User selectable, time series datasets are collected and recorded internally and/or can be output in real-time, using RS 232 or RS 422 formats.
The four beams fan out in a single axial plane, normally orientated perpendicular to the face of the structure. Changes in seabed levels adjacent to the structure are measured and can be relayed back from the field in real-time. Scour and subsequent refill events which might happen during storm periods, can thus be identified and fully quantified.
The Nortek Scour Monitor is manufactured in two frequencies 2MHz and 1MHz, offering vertical ranges of 10m and 30m respectively. Depending on beam slant angle, the measurement accuracy of these instruments is around 20cm.

NPL provides standards for underwater acoustics, and offers services that include testing of sonars, transducers and hydrophones in laboratory tanks, acoustic pressure vessel and open water test facility located on reservoir. NPL also provides training in underwater acoustic calibration and testing. NPL also offers a service for the assessment of the impact of underwater noise, providing the acoustics expertise required to satisfy requirements of regulators. Services include in-situ measurement of noise, noise prediction and mapping, and the evaluation of the impact on marine life.

OSIL will be releasing the new 1.2m Tern buoy platform, designed for harsh coastal environments, at Oceanology International 2012.The Tern buoy has approximately 600kg buoyancy, and can be equipped with any of the OSIL Data to Web solutions, or the Iridium data link. Osiris Projects are market leaders in ultra-high-resolution hydrographic and geophysical survey, specialising in the provision of bespoke, high quality solutions to all types of shallow- water survey requirements. The company will be showcasing their capabilities at Oceanology, and subject to work schedules, presenting their specialist 27.5m survey vessel, Bibby Tethra in the vessel demonstration area. Launched in 2011, Bibby Tethra provides an exceptionally stable working platform due to her advanced hull design and ultra-quiet, extremely economical operating profile. Tethra offers a number of unique features for a vessel of this size, including Dynamic Positioning (DP1), dual propulsion systems and comfortable air-conditioned accommodation for up to sixteen.

Water contamination in excess of 1000ppm will reduce the life of a lubricant and alter the fluids viscosity characteristics. Left unchecked, there is the potential for cavitation, corrosion, and damage to the system components. Reaction with the lubricant can also form harmful chemical by-products which will destroy essential additives. Again, left unchecked water contamination will increase the risk of microbiological growth within the system.
Panolin will be demonstrating a water control package incorporating the use of a Cardev subsea filter unit to remove water and a portable contamination monitoring unit for hydraulic oils. This package is an efficient, reliable and cost effective method of reducing the damage caused by water contamination.
Experienced technicians from UK distributer Environmental Technologies will be available to demonstrate and advise on the use of these products.

The 0.61m diameter platform, the smallest in the range which extends to 3.6m has recently undergone a complete mechanical overhaul with an all polyethylene equipment housing replacing the original stainless steel version. An additional mooring point has been added that provides improved stability in higher currents, and a choice of 7 different buoyancy modules are offered to cover a huge range of environmental conditions.

Prevco have sold more than 3000 of their ‘Titanium Dual Seal Pressure Relief Valves’ in less than a year and the product has become one of its fastest selling accessory items. The valve is typically fitted to subsea housings where internal components may cause off-gassing, i.e. batteries/electronics or where high external temperatures may cause pressures to increase to dangerous levels. The valves can be fabricated from Anodised Aluminium (100 metres rated) or Titanium (6000 + metres) treated with a dielectric coating which helps to prevent galling and corrosion from dissimilar metals. The valves typically crack at either 5psi or 10psi and make removal of endcaps completely safe. The product is available from both the USA and UK branches.
