Oceanology International: 50 Years Marine Science and Ocean Technology

In 1969, Oceanology International launched in Brighton to ‚ride the wave’ of progress in the ocean industry. From that moment on, the show grew to witness major technological developments and become the world’s largest ocean technology exhibition and conference. Take a look at how Oi has been bringing the marine science and ocean technology community together for 50 years…

1969-1980

The event launches in Brighton in 1969 at a time when the ocean industry was assuming massive importance largely due to the oil and gas industry. 600 industry exhibitors and visitors attended from all over the world. SUT sponsors the first-ever show (and is still sponsoring today).

The 1980s

Throughout the 80s, from its base in Brighton, the biennial event concentrated on steadily building its name as the world's largest state of the art marine science and ocean technology show dedicated to bringing the worldwide industry together.

The 1990s

The Oceanology International conference programme grows rapidly with an international technical programme of over 135 papers. The exhibition now hosts over 500 exhibitors and celebrates its 25th anniversary in 1994 with 11 exhibitors still there since the very first show.

2000-2014

The turn of the century marked the move from Brighton to ExCeL in London, a move driven to continue to grow the international business of its clientele. 2014 saw the event become record-breaking with over 8,000 unique visitors.

In 2013 Oceanology International launched OI China in Shanghai, connecting the international marine technology and ocean science communities with the Chinese market.

2016

The 2016 event held its name as the leading global event for the marine science and ocean technology community. The event was a unique opportunity for exhibitors and visitors to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business under one roof.

2017

February 2017 saw the launch of Oceanology International North America on 14-16 February at the San Diego Convention Centre, California, and has recently undergone a rebrand to Oceanology International Americas. This move will connect the global market with the American audience.
