Remote Hydrography Conference Rescheduled for May 2020

The Hydrographic Society UK has recently decided to reschedule its two-day Remote Hydrography conference (originally due to take place in late October 2019) for 6-7 May 2020. The venue remains the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. A revised Call for Abstracts for the new dates will be issued very shortly, with a deadline of 31 December 2019, and the programme is to be confirmed in February. Potential speakers who have already submitted an abstract do not need to do so again, unless they wish to take the opportunity to update it.

Opportunities for Demonstrations

With the obvious exception of the dates, all arrangements for exhibitors and sponsors remain unchanged. However, subject to the approval of the relevant authorities, the longer days and milder weather which May will hopefully bring, may now also offer some opportunities for demonstrations in the adjacent dock. Hydrographic Surveying in the Midst of a Paradigm Shift

Hydrographic surveying is in the midst of a paradigm shift, the Hydrographic Society UK states. According to the society the development and adoption of disruptive technologies and solutions are increasing survey capacity, capabilities and productivity like never before, whilst simultaneously reducing the risks and costs involved.

Autonomous and unmanned aerial, surface and underwater survey platforms, remote survey command and support services, and techniques such as satellite-derived bathymetry, crowdsourced bathymetry, artificial intelligence, machine learning and forward-looking sonar are revolutionizing data collection, processing, analysis and presentation.

"Through an inspiring programme of keynote speakers, presentations and panel-led discussions, this two-day conference will focus on the latest innovations, applications and deployments in remote and automated hydrography. It will consider the novel approaches, efficiencies and benefits offered to the commercial survey industry, alongside the opportunities for enhanced seafloor exploration and mapping and navigational safety and the implementation of e-Navigation and autonomous shipping," the Hydrographic Society says.
