EAR Technical Meeting
The EAR held a technical meeting on 15th July 2008 at Bruttour International Offices in Hornsby on Sydney’s Upper North Shore. The meeting was well attended with major discussion topics being how to attract younger members, how to ensure that the Society is meeting members’ needs and how to better engage and communicate with members.

Fewer numbers of members are joining the Society as a result of the lack of young people entering the profession. The following initiatives were decided upon:
-creating a technical discussion forum whereby all members of AHS will have the ability to exchange ideas and communicate
-encouraging interstate meetings to coordinate via teleconference
-hold a World Hydrography Day function in Sydney on or around 21st June 2009
-arrange a technical day with dinner afterwards for October 2008
-focus on education for the future, to encourage younger members
-more emphasis on technical presentations at meetings
-consider having meetings on Monday evenings to allow greater attendance from field surveyors.

A disk and hardcopy proceedings of HYDRO 07 can still be obtained from the AHS treasurer for AUD100.

The next meeting of EAR will be the AGM in September 2008. The longstanding EAR Chair, John Maschke, and EAR Secretary, David Garforth, have signalled their intention not to stand for office at the next EAR AGM, when election of office-bearers will occur.

Bruttour International was presented with an award for longstanding support to the Australasian Hydrographic Society, especially HYDRO 07.

At the conclusion of the meeting Mr Darryl Smith, Contract Surveyor, shared his recent experiences of carrying out survey work in Oman.
