Award for FUGRO Survey Manager

The Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technology Centre of Excellence (JALBTCX), has announced Fugro senior survey manager Nigel Townsend, as a 2011 recipient of the LCDR Peter Johnson Award for Survey Best Practice.

The award particularly recognises Nigel's leadership and Fugro staff's professionalism for their role in a recent Qatar Petroleum's (QP) combined airborne Lidar bathymetry and multibeam echo sounder survey. This prestigious award recognises project and field operations that overcome challenges and led to a notable success or advancement in best practices.

The survey was managed by Fugro Survey Middle East with an Airborne Lidar Bathymetry system built and operated by Fugro LADS Corporation and was conducted in close co-ordination with, and to the discerning standards of QP.

The survey covered a large industrial port and multiple offshore areas in the Arabian Gulf including a mooring area and offshore anchorage. Environmental conditions varied and had to be managed carefully. The data that was collected was done so to IHO order 1b standards and contributed to ensuring safe navigation in these important commercial maritime areas.

The award was presented at the annual JALBTCX conference held in Baltimore, Maryland 21st and 22nd June 2011. JALBTCX was established by the US Government to perform operations, research and development in Airborne Lidar Bathymetry and complementary technologies and support the charting requirements of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
