Marine Science & Technology Industry Trends Survey at OI2014

The Society of Maritime Industries, UK, will be undertaking the sixth iteration of the annual trends survey of the UK marine science and technology industry at Oceanology International 2014. Seen as a key indicator of how the industry has performed over the previous year, the survey also provides a view of where the industry expects to develop its business in the future.

Last year’s survey showed 56% had grown their businesses over the previous 12 months and 64% expected further growth this year. Exports remained strong with 81% reporting they were in overseas markets versus 77% in 2012. Companies were also taking on staff and there was a 4.8% increase in the number of employees per company interviewed. The oil and gas sector still dominates the market and 39% of companies supplying this sector, although renewable energy had shown big increase from 12% in 2012 to 18% last year. Although some weakening has been reported in the European market (down to 28% from 35%) it still remains the largest market in terms of size and growth.
