Serving the Industry for over 100 Years

Teledyne TSS Limited – a Teledyne Technologies Company

Teledyne TSS Limited, with its corporate headquarters in Watford, UK, is the world leader in the manufacture of marine navigation, gyrocompasses and steering controls. This is combined with a range of high-tech, accurate sensors for heading and motion measurement, and subsea pipe and cable survey and detection.

Teledyne TSS Ltd, formerly known as TSS (International) Ltd serves the marine, defence and offshore oil and gas industries by providing motion sensors, pipe and cable detection systems, gyrocompasses, and ship steering systems previously under the TSS and SG Brown brand names.

In the Beginning
SG Brown was established in 1903 to manufacture scientific instruments, predominantly the gyroscopic compass. To increase the company's production capacity during WWII, the British Admiralty financed an extension to the factory which the company ran on the Admiralty's behalf.

Throughout the years the Company has been owned by many companies including, the de Havilland Industrial Division, the Hawker Siddeley Group and Vosper Thornycroft. Then in 2008 TSS was purchased by Teledyne Limited, a subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated.

Today
Employing over 85 people and with an increasing order book and an expanding product range, Teledyne TSS moved in October 2009, from its 1960's factory to a new production facility and offices just 3 miles away. The new facility, being almost twice the size of the previous factory, has aided in increased productivity levels, whilst the size of customer services and sales areas have also increased significantly.
A new demonstration room, a Class 7 clean air room, and an environmental testing area, have also been incorporated into the new 21st century headquarters.

Products
Teledyne TSS Limited designs and manufactures world renowned products, including a range of motion sensors, mechanical gyrocompasses, inertial navigation systems, and pipe and cable detection equipment. Their products include the Meridian Standard which is suitable for the ever-changing needs of a modern integrated navigation bridge system, the Meridian Surveyor which has been specifically designed with a wide range of interfaces for use on any marine vessel and the SGB2000, a high performance solid state gyrocompass.

Meridian Repeaters and Ancillaries
In addition to the above mentioned products, we also have a range of meridian repeaters and ancillaries including DMS motion sensors which have been designed to enable highly productive hydrographic survey in all sea conditions, TSS motion sensors that have been proven to negate the errors associated with vessel motion and will exceed the requirements of IHO standards. MAHRS, Meridian Attitude and Heading Reference System, combines the accuracies of the Meridian gyrocompass and dynamic motion sensors in a one-box solution. Orion INS is an inertial navigation system designed for high accuracy motion compensation applications. The 440 & 350 range of detection equipment is the industry standard in subsea pipe and cable survey. MK31 offers a commercial off-the-shelf solution for defence platform stabilisation as well as heading and motion referencing for other ship's systems. DMM, Deck Motion Monitor, has been designed to meet CAA recommendations for safe helicopter landings.

Teledyne TSS serves the naval defence, hydrographic survey, dynamic positioning, offshore construction and telecommunications industries, and can also provide bespoke engineering services and retrofit solutions for vessel navigation and steering operations.

Continuing Success
The company's recent move to new premises has provided it with space for more efficient production lines and it has a number of new products in development that are soon expected to occupy them. New product launches are planned for exhibitions in early 2011.

Brian Huntsman, vice president and general manager of Teledyne TSS says, "TSS is working hard to secure a successful future for the business and its employees. This includes a clear business growth strategy, with identifiable product development opportunities in the next five years. The move to our new premises and investment in company-wide training in lean techniques endorses our aim of remaining market leaders and the supplier of choice in navigation, motion sensing and cable and pipe detection systems."
