VT TSS Launches MAHRS

For nearly two years the sales team at VT TSS had been receiving orders for a combined installation of its Meridian gyro-compass and its Dynamic Motion Sensor (DMS). It was, therefore, suggested to VT TSS that it would be easier if the two units could be combined in one box. They would be easier to install and easier to use, and so the company developed the Meridian Heading and Attitude System (MAHRS). One notable new attribute is the deck plane correction, which was made possible by the use of an internal algorithm that can correct the gyroscope with highly accurate attitude information provided by the DMS. The result is a new level of accuracy for an already accurate gyro. The combination of the two components on one chassis also makes it possible to achieve a closely coupled survey axis by mechanically aligning roll and pitch with the heading axis during factory tests. A key element in the performance of the MAHRS is its use of a dynamically tuned gyroscope. Independent tests have confirmed that the MAHRS is able to achieve greater heading accuracy than with Fibre Optic Gyros (FOG) and the robust nature of their design makes transport easier with lower repair and maintenance costs. No scheduled maintenance is necessary and should a complete new gyro element ever need replacement, it can be supplied and fitted for a substantially lower cost than other gyro manufacturers’ repair costs.
