20th Anniversary of International Tribunal for The Law of the Sea

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is celebrating its 20th anniversary from 5 to 7 October 2016 with two main events. The first, an international symposium entitled 'The Contribution of the Tribunal to the Rule of Law', will be held on 5 and 6 October at the seat of the Tribunal. On 7 October, a solemn ceremony will be held in Hamburg City Hall in the presence of the secretary general of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, and the president of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr Joachim Gauck.

The symposium programme, which is available on the Tribunal’s website, includes speakers representing both sides of the bench, with Judges of the Tribunal, the International Court of Justice and other judicial institutions, academics, lawyers and counsel who have appeared before international courts and tribunals. The panel discussions will explore the following topics: ‘The Tribunal’s jurisprudence and its contribution to the rule of law’; ‘The contribution of the Tribunal to the progressive development of international law’; ‘The contribution of the Tribunal to the rule of law: the point of view of practitioners’; and ‘Improving working methods in international adjudication’. Attendance at the symposium is by invitation only. The symposium will be broadcast live on the Tribunal’s website and the proceedings will be published in the coming months with the assistance of the Ministry of Justice of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Ceremony in the City Hall of Hamburg

The solemn ceremony to mark the Tribunal’s anniversary will be held in the City Hall of Hamburg on 7 October 2016 at 2:30 p.m., at the invitation of the President of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, First Mayor Olaf Scholz, and the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection. Statements will be given on this occasion by Mr Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Joachim Gauck, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, the First Mayor of Hamburg, and the President of the Tribunal, Judge Vladimir Golitsyn.
