CHS Contracts for Airborne Lidar Bathymetry

Fugro GeoSurveys, Canada, has been awarded a ‘Supply Arrangement’ by the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) to provide Airborne Lidar Bathymetry (ALB) survey services. CHS will predominantly use this contract to procure ALB surveys, as needed anywhere in Canada, to support its nautical charting programme, particularly in shallow water areas which are difficult to access safely using vessel-based systems. ALB data also can be used for a variety of environmental applications in coastal and shallow water areas.

Fugro’s ALB systems will be used to acquire hydrographic survey data and seabed imagery in shallow coastal waters, where it is far more efficient and less risky than traditional vessel-based acoustic methods. Fugro’s ALB systems are capable of acquiring hydrographic data to International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Order 1, enabling CHS to use the data to ultimately update their nautical charts. The multiple returns from Fugro’s ALB systems can be processed to generate reflectance imagery of the seabed, which is used in seabed classification and benthic mapping.

The Supply Arrangement prequalifies Fugro to provide ALB survey services for CHS anywhere in Canada over the next 5 years. In the past two years, Fugro has successfully completed a number of ALB survey projects throughout Canada including Newfoundland, Quebec and the Canadian Arctic.
