SeaDarQ organised a test together with the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Water Management on the coastline close to Kijkduin, The Netherlands. The aim was to provide an accurate hydrographic map of currents, depth and waves around the area of the Sand Engine project, where 20 million square metres of sand have been deployed to protect the coastline dunes from penetrating waves. Since the conducted trial was successful, long-term SeaDarQ system testing for the Sand Engine observation project will include building an observation tower for radar.
The Sand Engine is an innovative method for coastal protection. The Sand Engine is a huge volume of sand that was applied along the coast of South-Holland at Ter Heijde in 2011 so that wind, waves and currents could subsequently spread the sand naturally along the coast of South-Holland. This is called ‘Building with Nature’. The Sand Engine gradually changes in shape and will eventually be fully incorporated into the dunes and the beach, making the coast will be broader and safer.
A Sand Engine project is also under way on the UK coastline.
