David E. Wells: a legacy in hydrography

Dr David E. Wells, a distinguished figure in the hydrographic community, died on 22 November in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. His passing is deeply felt by many who knew him as a pioneering expert and generous mentor.

Dr Wells had a profound and lasting impact on the field of hydrography, driving significant advancements and inspiring countless professionals. He was highly regarded by students and colleagues for his innovative ideas and extensive knowledge, which he shared with great generosity. Known worldwide as a leading authority on GPS and positioning, his contributions left an indelible mark on the hydrographic sector.

Born in 1939 in Montreal, David Ernest Wells began his professional journey in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, marking the start of a distinguished career in surveying engineering. He earned his doctorate from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and later became a professor there, where he played a pivotal role in developing a comprehensive curriculum for global positioning and ocean mapping. His work led to the creation of the internationally recognized Guide to GPS Positioning, a landmark publication that propelled his parallel career as a global trainer and speaker at conferences and professional courses.

In 1998, Dr Wells transitioned to emeritus status at UNB, which allowed him to take on consulting roles. This included a position at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he collaborated with the US Navy to train students in advanced navigational techniques. This final chapter of his career spanned nearly 18 years, solidifying his legacy as a pioneer and mentor in the hydrographic field.
