Deep Trekker introduces Distance Lock for precise ROV navigation

Deep Trekker has launched Distance Lock, a new add-on designed to enhance control and accuracy in remotely operated vehicle (ROV) navigation. The forward-facing proximity sensor enables operators to maintain a consistent distance from a target surface; a crucial feature for underwater inspections such as ship hull assessments, dam surveys and long-duration marine operations.

The system calculates the distance between the ROV and the surface ahead, displaying real-time data on the user interface. Operators can lock a fixed distance, allowing the ROV to automatically maintain that separation throughout the mission. This hands-free approach reduces the need for constant manual corrections and ensures stable navigation, particularly during extended inspections.

Simplifying complex inspection tasks

Designed for seamless integration with Deep Trekker’s Revolution and Pivot ROVs, the sensor is compact and externally mounted, minimizing drag while maintaining stability. It operates at 500kHz CHIRP, supporting inspections at depths of up to 300 metres. The technology is optimized for use on relatively flat surfaces and can function on angles up to 45 degrees off-axis.

One of the key benefits of the Distance Lock is its ability to simplify complex inspection tasks. In hydroelectric and nuclear facility assessments, for instance, maintaining a steady distance from structural walls improves data accuracy and efficiency. In maritime applications, such as sea wall or ship hull inspections, the sensor helps collect precise data over long distances, even when the target surface is not entirely flat. For civil infrastructure inspections, including dams and underwater structures, the system provides enhanced control, reducing the workload for operators while ensuring consistent results.

By automating distance control, the Distance Lock improves efficiency as well as precision in underwater inspections, which makes it a valuable tool for professionals in various sectors. With this addition, Deep Trekker continues to refine ROV capabilities, addressing industry challenges with solutions designed for real-world conditions.
