Deep-water Measurement Campaign Completed Offshore Portugal

A deep-water measurement campaign offshore Portugal has been completed by Metocean Services International (MSI), having achieved 100% data return across multiple mooring locations. MSI was contracted by Calecore, on behalf of Repsol, to profile currents at two separate locations in over 750m water depth. This project marks the first time the company has worked in Portuguese waters.

The moorings consisted of multiple ADCPs and Aquadopp current meters, spaced across the full depth of the water column, in order to provide a high-resolution image of the complex current interactions at each location. Deployment took place from Calecore’s multi-role vessel Kommandor Calum in April 2014.

As the client required data urgently, both moorings were retrieved, serviced, and redeployed in May. The Portuguese Hydrographic Institute provided the Almirante Gago Coutinho vessel for this purpose. Use of this vessel also provided trainee personnel of the Portuguese Navy an excellent opportunity to hone their skills, assisting with retrieval operations. The Almirante Gago Coutinho was again utilised when MSI successfully recovered and demobilised both moorings in June and July. The entire campaign was completed with zero HSE incidents.

While this is the first project that MSI and Calecore have collaborated on, MSI has previously deployed instrumentation on behalf of Repsol in waters off Namibia. This project also achieved 100% data return.
