Environmental Ship to be Fitted with Navigation Radars

Northrop Grumman Corporation has received orders to supply navigation radars for a new ship being built for the Norwegian environmental organization Green Warriors of Norway. The Green Warriors’ ship, M/V Miljødronningen, will be fitted with two VisionMaster FT radars supplied by Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit. The radars will be integrated with the vessel’s electronic chart display and information system and voyage data recorder, and will provide the conference room with live information from the bridge operation.

The M/V Miljødronningen will serve as a floating conference center and environmental surveillance platform. It will also conduct a variety of subsea environmental research studies and serve as a floating “green laboratory” for demonstrating environmentally-friendly solutions in materials and construction. The 33.9 metre (108 ft.) catamaran is being built at the Fjellstrand shipyard in Hardanger and is scheduled to be delivered in September 2007. It is designed for operation in icy waters of the northern Barents Sea, Svalbard and North Sea.

The VisionMaster FT radars, introduced in 2006, incorporate Sperry Marine’s proprietary automatic clutter suppression technology, which facilitates detecting and identifying small, weak targets in the presence of sea and rain clutter. They are type-approved by the United Kingdom classification organization QinetiQ.
