European Coastal Zones Full Dataset Now Available

The final version of the European Coastal Zones datasets for reference years 2012 and 2018 plus accompanying change mapping is now available.

Further to the partial release of Coastal Zones datasets in November 2020, the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS) is pleased to now announce the release of the remaining datasets of this new thematic hotspot product. This has been the result of a set of coordinated activities with the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS).

Europe’s Coastal Land Areas

More than 700,000 km2 of Europe’s coastal land areas have been mapped at a detail of 0.5ha. Available are the status layers of the years 2012 and 2018 and a change layer for 2012–2018.

The Coastal Zones product is the fourth thematic hotspot product of the local component of the CLMS. Based on visual interpretation of very high-resolution imagery, the new product provides a rich LULC nomenclature (71 thematic classes) harmonized with the other hot spot monitoring products and specifically tailored to address coastal LULC dynamics.

Coastal zone extent towards land is based on a cut-off line of 10km from the coastline and including all areas under a direct and tangible influence of coastal phenomena as suggested by the feedback collected from the users during the project.
