Fast Survey Vessels

The Freedom and the Libertas are two vessels that will be surveying for the Rotterdam port extension. The Freedom, christened on Friday 27 February 2009 in Urk (The Netherlands), is a new-built vessel whilst the Libertas has been refit for the job.

The Freedom now is the second vessel of No Limit Ships that will be surveying in Rotterdam. The smaller Spirit made a good impression during earlier archaeological and pre-work surveys. The No Limit ships combine a good stability and higher speed, thus making offshore surveying a fast job. The newly-christened vessel has been built according to hydrographic requirements. The 16.5m vessel has a moonpool containing the sensors that easily can be exchanged for maintenance. The dredging combination PUMA will use the Libertas, 17.5m long and having the surveying equipment, amongst them a RESON multi-beam, fixed on the hull.

After a word of welcome by Jelle Hakvoort, director and owner of Braveheart Shipping, the ceremony took place, after which the interested were able to sail both ships. Then, Jelle Hakvoort, in cooperation with Jeroen van Reenen of Port of Rotterdam, gave a short explanation of the project and the activities the ships will be used for.

Since 2005, Braveheart Shipping has been sailing the Spirit, No Limit 1500, as hydrographic survey vessel for Port of Rotterdam. Because of the positive experiences, the assignment - and with that the actitivities for the second Maasvlakte - was extended. The need for a bigger capacity, led Hakvoort to buy a second and third No Limit to perform the assignment optimally.
