Getting the Grades to Work Offshore
'Introduction to Geophysical Engineering' is a UK offshore course developed by Gardline East Coast Training Services, aimed at science graduates and people with an engineering background. A fully accredited Level 3 QCF qualification, the course provides the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to become an offshore geophysical engineer.
Over a three-week period, students are taught the basics of geophysical surveys and given practical hands-on experience with a wide range of specialist equipment including high resolution 2D seismic systems, digital streamers and sonar scanners. On completion of the course, candidates are expected to complete a written examination and practical assessment using Gardline’s purpose-built simulation lab.
Adam Iche, who worked as a weapons engineer in the Royal Navy for 14 years was offered a position after finishing the course. After leaving the Navy, he struggled for three years trying to find a pathway into the offshore industry, so he used his Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Services (ELCAS) funding for the Introduction to Geophysical Engineering course and was offered a position as a multi-disciplined geophysical engineer. He is now looking forward to starting a fulfilling and rewarding second career in the offshore industry.
