GROOM Project Reaching Out

The objective of GROOM is the design of a new European research infrastructure to use underwater gliders for the benefit of European citizens, researchers and industry. GROOM is defining the scientific, technological and organisational/legal levels of a European glider capacity for research and sustained observations of the oceans, in line with the other European and international initiatives for marine in-situ observations.

This new infrastructure strongly relies on the EuroARGO infrastructure which has recently been legally established to maintain the European contribution into the ARGO Program. GROOM also considers the relevant international coordinating bodies such as GOOS. The technological component of the infrastructure is based on several dedicated 'gliderports' to maintain and operate the European fleets of gliders in the global ocean in coordination with US, Canadian, Australian and other similar infrastructures, as well as in European regional seas. More information is available online, or during Oceanology International at stand A335.
