Hydro04 Programme

Nearly thirty papers by leading experts from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, UK and the US are to be presented at The Hydrographic Society’s 14th biennial international symposium in Galway, Ireland from 2nd to 4th November. Proceedings will open with a keynote address by Dr Wyn Williams, Chief Executive and Hydrographer of the UK Hydrographic Office, followed by a review of hydrographic heritage by Sir Tipene O’Regan, the noted Maori academician and historian.
The main theme of the Symposium is ‘Diversity’, providing a forum dealing with the use of hydrographic expertise for both traditional and non-traditional survey applications. Topics to be covered include Visualisation via Video Gaming, Remote Sensing Imagery, Multibeam Sounding, Electronic Charting, Coastal Zone Surveying, Marine Archaeology, Arctic Bathymetry, and Environmental Mapping & Monitoring. Also prominently featured will be presentations by representatives of the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Marine Institute of Ireland on the Irish National Seabed Survey project, currently the world’s largest hydrographic venture, involving offshore mapping of an area ten times larger than Ireland itself.
Proceedings will be supported by a series of workshops and demonstrations. There will also be an exhibition of equipment and services with representatives of nearly thirty organisations.
