ISO and IHO Memorandum of Understanding

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has recently been signed between the ISO and IHO organisations. The MoU covers cooperation between the ISO/Technical Committee 211 (ISO/TC/211) and the IHO to enable the development and alignment of agreed joint standards and profiles based on some or all of the parts of the ISO 19100 series of geographic standards or other related standards.

In view of the IHO’s recent adoption of S-100 and the deliberate close alignment of S-100 with the ISO 19100 series of standards, establishing a good cooperative arrangement with ISO is particularly important.

The MoU was signed by Mr Rob Steele, Secretary-General of ISO on behalf of the ISO on 19 February 2012.  As there were no objections raised by Member States, the President of the Directing Committee signed the MoU on behalf of the IHO on 26 March 2012.

This MoU with ISO marks another step in ensuring that IHO standards are recognised and will continue to be used widely in all the relevant geospatial data disciplines.
