Klein picks Exail navigation technology to equip sidescan sonar
Klein Marine Systems has chosen Exail’s Octans Nano OEM attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) as the standard navigation component for its flagship 5900 sidescan sonar (SSS). The decision reflects a strategic move to boost the performance and reliability of seabed imaging across defence, security and commercial operations.
The Octans Nano delivers heading accuracy of 0.5° secant latitude and pitch/roll accuracy of 0.1°, offering the precise navigational data required to optimize sonar imagery and streamline post-mission processing. Its compact form factor and energy-efficient design make it well-suited for long-duration deployments on uncrewed or crewed subsea platforms. By integrating Exail’s AHRS, Klein aims to ensure sharper, more accurate data collection in high-resolution seabed surveys – strengthening its position in the competitive sonar technology market.
“By integrating the Exail Octans Nano OEM into our 5900 SSS, we are significantly enhancing both positioning accuracy and image stability,” said Ted Curley, general manager at Klein Marine Systems. “This advanced motion compensation technology reduces data errors, delivering clearer and more reliable imagery for critical missions.”
Geophysical surveys and wreck detection
The Klein 5900 SSS is renowned for its high-resolution seabed mapping capabilities, supporting critical tasks such as geophysical surveys, wreck detection and the identification of unexploded ordnance (UXO). With the integration of Exail’s AHRS technology, the sonar’s ability to maintain stability and reduce drift in challenging underwater conditions is strengthened, ensuring consistent and precise data collection in even the most complex environments.
“Klein Marine Systems’ selection of the Exail Octans Nano OEM reflects the trust placed in our cutting-edge AHRS technology,” said Shayan Haque, regional sales manager at Exail. “We are proud to support Klein’s mission to deliver innovative solutions that empower users to perform more precise and efficient underwater surveys.”
The integration of Exail’s inertial navigation technology into Klein Marine Systems’ sonar platforms underscores the growing importance of precise, compact AHRS solutions in subsea operations. As the demand for accurate seabed mapping increases, the collaboration reflects a broader industry shift toward enhancing navigation performance in underwater environments.
