Kongsberg Discovery expands subsea sensing portfolio under Listen brand

As offshore operators seek clearer insight into increasingly complex subsea conditions, Kongsberg Discovery has introduced an updated version of its Kongsberg Listen electromagnetic sensor system. Previously marketed as Argeo Listen, the platform has undergone a series of hardware and software modifications. The changes are aimed at strengthening data processing performance and improving visualization, enabling users to interpret electromagnetic survey results more efficiently.

The Kongsberg Listen electromagnetic sensor system is designed to operate independently of specific platforms, allowing it to be deployed across a range of vessels and subsea assets. According to the company, this flexibility broadens its applicability across ocean science, defence, offshore energy and marine minerals projects, where detailed subsurface information is required to support inspection and survey operations.

Integrating electromagnetic sensing technologies

In August 2025, Kongsberg Discovery acquired the electromagnetic sensing technologies of Argeo and brought key members of the specialist team into its organization. Since then, the company has focused on integrating the technology into its broader subsea portfolio while further developing the platform. The relaunch of the system under the Kongsberg Listen name reflects that process.

The technology has already been deployed on vessels in the HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle family, where it has been used in commercial survey operations. Following these deployments, Kongsberg Discovery is now moving towards a wider commercial rollout.

The system will make its trade-show debut under the Kongsberg Listen brand at Oceanology International in London from 10-12 March.

Actionable insights

“Argeo Listen was already a world-leading passive electromagnetic sensing solution and this upgrade takes it to a new level,” comments Audun Berg, executive vice president, Kongsberg Discovery. “The refinements combine to deliver clearer, more precise results with enhanced efficiency and simplicity, whatever the demands of the mission. This helps users move from data acquisition to actionable insights with increased speed and confidence.

Berg continues: “The results we’ve already been seeing onboard HUGINs gives an indication of what customers can look forward to – with proven high performance in applications spanning everything from pipeline inspection with cathodic protection evaluations, to marine mineral explorations, and geophysical surveys including buried cable positioning. Kongsberg Listen is the solution the market has been waiting for.”

Revised workflow

Users of Argeo Listen will find that the updated platform now operates within Blue Insight, Kongsberg’s data and analytics environment. The integration brings electromagnetic data into a broader operational framework, enabling processing, interpretation and visualization within a single software ecosystem.

The revised workflow is designed to support the full chain from raw electromagnetic measurements to client-ready datasets, reducing the need for multiple standalone tools and manual data transfers. For operators, this consolidation is intended to improve efficiency and consistency across survey projects.

The system’s deployment flexibility also remains central to its positioning. It can be installed on a range of subsea platforms, including autonomous underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles and towed systems, allowing operators to incorporate electromagnetic sensing into existing offshore assets rather than investing in dedicated platforms.
