Kongsberg reshapes its future with two focused global technology leaders
Kongsberg Gruppen ASA is preparing to reshape its future. After a decade of strong expansion driven by global demand for both security and sustainability, the company now sees an opportunity to accelerate further. The Board has proposed a major structural move: Kongsberg Maritime will be demerged and listed on the Euronext Oslo Stock Exchange as an independent maritime technology company, while Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Kongsberg Discovery will be consolidated into a single advanced technology- and defence-focused Kongsberg.
The timing is not accidental. Security concerns, sustainability requirements and geopolitical shifts are redefining priorities in markets worldwide. Kongsberg has already experienced significant growth under these forces and the outlook remains strong. The Board believes the best way to capture the full potential ahead is to give each business the autonomy and focus it needs to thrive within its own industry environment.
Security and sustainability
“This will further strengthen competitiveness in our efforts to create value in a world where security and sustainability are expected to dominate in the coming decades. Individually, the companies will gain better navigation opportunities and execution capabilities within their respective markets. Both companies will continue to have significant national strategic importance with headquarters in Norway,” said Eivind Reiten, chair of the Board of Kongsberg Gruppen ASA.
The Group’s solid foundation makes this moment possible. Since 2016, Kongsberg has tripled its operating revenues. At the end of the third quarter of 2025, the company counted 15,000 employees and a historically high order backlog. Revenues, results and workforce are now evenly distributed between the two business areas – a clear signal that each is ready to operate independently.
Different demands
“The units operate in different international markets that are undergoing change. This places different demands on business models. Kongsberg Maritime holds a leading technology position and offers products and integrated solutions across a wide range of segments – from offshore vessels to the merchant fleet and naval segment. The consolidated technology and defence company Kongsberg addresses critical needs in defence, security and surveillance, delivering solutions for both civilian and defence applications,” said Geir Håøy, president and CEO of Kongsberg Gruppen ASA.
By separating, the companies will gain the agility required to match the pace of innovation in their respective fields. Rising geopolitical tensions and shifting trade dynamics amplify the need for specialized strategies. The differences in global exposure and customer demands make focused business models increasingly advantageous.
Although synergies between the maritime and defence businesses have diminished over time, collaboration will continue where it delivers commercial benefit. With this new structure, it is believed that two strong Norwegian companies will be better equipped to pursue growth on the global stage – each with a clear mission and the freedom to deliver on it.
