Liz Corbin Leads MTS Board
Elizabeth "Liz" Corbin assumed leadership of the Marine Technology Society (MTS) on 1st January 2009. Corbin, manager of the Science and Technology Branch of the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), took over the position from Bruce C. Gilman, P.E., interim CEO of Deep Marine Technology.
Corbin has been with DBEDT for over 25 years. Before joining DBEDT, she spent 10 years in various research and administrative support positions at the University's Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. She was president of the Hawaii Academy of Science from 1987-1988. For many years, she was the secretary and meeting planner of the MTS Hawaii Section, and she served as executive co-chair for OCEANS'01 MTS/IEEE Conference. Corbin serves on the PACON International board of directors and executive committee. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in zoology.
Three other board positions changed in the new year. Kevin Hardy, vice president at DeepSea Power & Light in San Diego, Calif., is the new vice president of section affairs. He replaces Sandor Karpathy, vice president and senior manager at Stress Subsea, Inc., in Houston, Texas. Debra Kill, a certified public accountant, is the new MTS treasurer and vice president of budget and finance. She replaces Jerry Boatman who has moved to the position of president-elect. Boatman, corporate vice president of engineering for Planning Systems, Inc., will take over leadership of MTS in two years.
