Louis Maltais receives Ex Abyssis Ad Alta Award for driving hydrographic innovation

Louis Maltais has been named recipient of the 2025 Ex Abyssis Ad Alta Award for Hydrographic Excellence, announced by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) on this year’s World Hydrography Day. With a career spanning over 25 years, Maltais has played a central role in modernizing Canada’s hydrographic services and advancing global standards for digital navigation. Currently serving as Director of Navigational Geospatial Services and Support (NGSS) at the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS), he has held a range of leadership positions, including overseeing two CHS operational offices.

S-100 standards

Maltais is widely recognized for his efforts to accelerate the implementation of the IHO’s S-100 standards – a framework aimed at improving the accuracy and interoperability of hydrographic and navigational data. His coordination of the S-100 sea trials in the St Lawrence River has been highlighted as a practical model for other countries, helping prepare the international community ahead of the IHO’s 2026 target for widespread adoption.

Beyond his national contributions, Maltais has been active in several IHO working groups and committees, including direct involvement in developing key S-100 product specifications and serving as vice chair of the Tides, Water Level and Currents Working Group. He currently leads Canada’s delegation to the Hydrographic Services and Standards Committee.

Digital transformation

Maltais’s work reflects broader shifts in the maritime and geospatial sectors, where digital transformation and data standards are becoming essential for safer and more efficient navigation. His leadership has not only strengthened Canada’s position as a hydrographic innovator but also supported global efforts to modernize marine navigation infrastructure.

Dr John Nyberg, Director of the IHO, stated: “I have had the privilege of working with Mr Maltais for many years, during which he has consistently demonstrated innovative leadership within the hydrographic community. His enthusiasm for advancing modern technology and his dedication to its practical implementation have been instrumental in driving progress and benefiting the community as a whole.”
