Marine Electronic Highway Survey

The hydrographic survey within the Traffic Separation Scheme of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore will cover an area of 621.3 square kilometres around the One Fathom Bank area, representing 14.38% of the total area of the TSS. This is one of the key activities of the Marine Electronic Highway (MEH) Demonstration Project, now being in its final stages of implementation.

The target area to be surveyed has a depth of less than 25m. Some parts of the target area had been resurveyed at various times between 1972 and 2005 and this forthcoming survey by the Project will result in an updated Electronic Navigation Chart of the upper part of the TSS. The survey will be carried out by GEMS Survey Limited using multi-beam sonar technology in collaboration with the Dinas Hidro-Oseanografi (DISHIDROS) of Indonesia and the National Hydrographic Centre of Malaysia. The survey is scheduled this month. On board the survey vessel will be members of the MEH Project Oversight Team (MOST) composed of hydrographers from DISHIDROS, the National Hydrographic Centre and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. MOST will provide operational and technical guidance and assistance to the Contractor aside from ensuring that the survey is carried out in accordance with the Scope of Services and the Contractor's Project Execution Plan. In addition, MOST is tasked to certify the survey outputs/milestones and as representative of the Project and IMO.
