MBES Training Course Completed

In August 2012, UK-based Swathe Services & HydroCharting delivered the first in a series of new multibeam echo sounder (MBES) training courses designed to give hydrographic surveyors hands-on experience on how to set-up, interface, calibrate and operate MBES equipment. This, combined with in-depth training on QPS QINSy and Qloud, resulted in surveyors gaining valuable knowledge and experience which enabled them to undertake MBES surveys independently.

This first course was also supplemented by the provision of equipment and first-class instruction from Adrian Gibbon from Applanix and Ben Dean from C-NAV who both gave classroom-based lectures and on-water instruction on how to get the best out of the equipment. Additional support was also given by QPS and Valeport in the form of sponsored evenings where surveyors enjoyed local food and entertainment.

Surveyors agreed that the hands-on approach in the course was a great way to learn. They also commented that managing director of HydroCharting Jesper Hoejdal's knowledge and experience of the topic was to an impeccable standard.

Building on the course's success, plans are already in place for more training courses in the future.  Although dates are still to be confirmed, a GeoSwath Plus training course is due to be given in November 2012 followed by another MBES training course in early 2013.
