MDMS for Guernsey Electricity

Fugro Survey Ltd has installed a Marine Data Management System for Guernsey Electricity in the Channel Islands. This was the first installation by GeoSoft Solutions, a new department within Fugro Survey Ltd, operating out of Great Yarmouth in the United Kingdom. The department is charged with developing GIS solutions for internal and external clients.
GeoSoft Solutions had over a period of time developed the marine data management system for Guernsey Electricity such that any incidents happening close to their power cables at sea could be monitored from their control room. Functionality embedded within the system included the display of S57 vector data, an Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC), spatial attributes, as-laid cable positions and zoom, and pan and vessel position display.
Someone in the control room is able to enter the position and heading of a vessel through the keyboard and set a circle of influence that indicates to the operator, in both graphical and analytical modes, whether the vessel and any towed equipment might be impinging upon assets. Guernsey Electricity can then advise the vessel and monitor the incident as it develops. One important feature of the system is that the client can request the functionality required and so does not necessarily need to have the full functionality of industry-standard GIS.
