Mercury for ROV Training

The Underwater Centre has recently added to its training capabilities by acquiring another Mercury Sonar. Originally designed for Mine Hunting and Classification, the Mercury Sonar is a compact, frequency agile system operating from 600kHz to 1.2MHz, combining long-range target identification with short range measurements.  

Now standard on smaller observation ROVs, it is manufactured for use at 300m,1000m, 3000m or 6000m. In addition, it can be operated by a standard laptop without any dedicated surface equipment using non-licensed PC software.

Sonavision director, Andy Williamson, commented that in the unpredictable waters of Loch Linnhe where visibility can be poor, it's very gratifying that The Underwater Centre return to Sonavision regularly to strengthen their teaching resources buying additional systems.
