MG3 Launches New Density Survey System

MG3, Iceland, a geoscience survey company operating in both the offshore and coastal environment and providing worldwide marine geophysical, geotechnical and geochemical services, has introduced a new density survey sytem called DensX. To determine the nautical depth, instruments are needed to measure the density of the mud. DensX is a tool that continuously measures the density of fluid mud layers.

The presence of loosely packed silt layers in maritime access channels and harbours can cause manoeuvring problems for deep draughted vessels, sailing with limited keel clearance. This also hampers the correct monitoring of maintenance and capital dredging work in those areas.

Existing systems are not always sufficient for determining the maximal nautical depth and accurate volumes of sediment. To solve this problem the DensX can be utilised. With the development of the DensX a great technological step was taken in determining the nautical bottom and knowledge concerning the impact of dredging activities in silty areas.

After passing extensive fieldwork acceptance trials starting early 2013, a new system is presently in use for determination of the Nautical Bottom with a customer in The Netherlands. The scope of services provided by MG3, includes specialist geoscience surveys in the offshore and coastal environment, providing marine geophysical, geotechnical and geochemical services.
