Near Real-time Data from Dubai

As part of its Coastal Zone Monitoring Programme, the Marine Works Unit of the Dubai Municipality has set up a website (www.dubaicoast.org) which enables viewers to watch near real-time video of wave conditions along the Jumeirah coastline. The video pictures are obtained by two cameras mounted on the Burj al Arab hotel on Jumeirah Beach and are part of a general programme to broaden the Municipality's knowledge of the physical processes at work within the Dubai coastal zone. Other near real-time information that can be accessed from the website includes data on wave heights, water levels, wind, pressure and temperature. The information is gathered by systems established for the Municipality by the EmuDome Joint Venture that has a three-year contract to monitor the entire 70km-long Dubai coastline. EmuDome also monitors shoreline dynamics with regular bathymetric surveys along pre-set profile lines and by land-based topographic studies. The joint venture has a permanent survey team with survey vessel based in Dubai to meet the requirements of this and other contracts in the Middle East.
