OceanWise and UKHO expand tide monitoring to Grand Turk
OceanWise has taken another step in its collaboration with the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) by installing a Marine Environmental Monitoring Station (MEMS) on Grand Turk, the largest island in the Turks Islands, part of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The new station extends a growing network of tide and sea-level gauges already established across the Caribbean, South Atlantic and Indian Ocean, reinforcing the UKHO’s worldwide monitoring programme. By capturing accurate, real-time tide and sea-level data, the Grand Turk installation closes an important gap in regional coverage – supporting safer navigation and charting, while also feeding into wider scientific and environmental uses.

Improving access to accurate hydrographic data
The Grand Turk installation represents another step in the UKHO’s long-term commitment to improving access to accurate hydrographic data, particularly in remote or underserved locations. Each MEMS station contributes to global maritime safety, disaster preparedness and evidence-based decision-making – and data from the stations is already being shared via the GLOSS (Global Sea Level Observing System) network.
OceanWise’s role in the programme includes the supply and configuration of equipment, which includes tide gauges, met stations, commissioning, training and the integration of real-time data into the OceanWise Port-Log platform, ensuring information is reliable, accessible to whoever needs it, and secure.
The Grand Turk installation is part of a wider strategic vision to support the International Hydrographic Organization’s S-100 framework and modernize how sea-level data is captured and shared worldwide.
