Pollutant Transport Studies
The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is undertaking research into the transport and pathways of pollutants along a latitudinal gradient from Scotland to the Yermak Platea UN (Arctic Circle). Sediment geochemistry studies will form an important part of the programme and SAMS has ordered a Bowers and Connelly Maxi Corer from OSIL for this purpose.
The Maxi Corer was chosen for its ease of use and reliability in collecting undisturbed, high-quality sediment samples. Each of the eight sediment cores obtained per deployment contains both sediment and an overlying supernatant, providing an unique insight into the sediment-water interface and preserving the sample for top quality results.
The Maxi Corer will be used in a range of environments from Arctic fjords and deep-sea locations to Scottish coastal sites and sea lochs. The programme will also investigate climate change in these regions and the corer will be used to collect biological samples in the same areas.
