Portugal Strengthens Cooperation in Marine Research

Portugal's geographical position on the Atlantic Ocean has played a crucial role throughout its history. The country has made major investments in marine research over the last few years and is currently consolidating its network of international cooperations in this area. Against this backdrop, the Portuguese Ambassador to Germany, His Excellency João António Da Costa Mira Gomes, visited the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.

In an in-depth discussion he talked with GEOMAR Director Professor Peter Herzig about GEOMAR's existing projects with Portuguese partners as well as future opportunities for cooperation. A further focus of the visit was the topic of marine technology, which Professor Herzig and Ambassador Gomes deepened during a visit to GEOMAR's Technology and Logistics Centre.

Professor Herzig stated after the visit that Portugal is very active in marine research. The country is already an important partner, which he expects to intensify in the near future.
