SNAME Technical Programme 2009 - 15/09/2009
The technical programme for the Society of Naval Architects and Engineers (SNAME) Annual Meeting and Expo (21st to 23rd October at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI, USA) features papers on 35 ship design and production topics, three new continuing education courses and four timely panel discussions.
"This year's technical papers cover an expanded range of topics, presented in a format that encourages audience interaction and discussion with the presenters," said Nancy Ostin, SNAME Director of Membership and Marketing. Abstracts of all technical papers can be viewed at the conference website. The full text of each paper will be available online to registered attendees.
An optional day of continuing education courses, approved for seven continuing education credits (PDHs), will be offered on Wednesday, 23rd October.
Course 1. Early-phase ship design by Benjamin Capuco (Gibbs & Cox, Inc.) and Sean Walsh (Alion Science). An overview of the early stage ship-design process, encompassing feasibility studies and preliminary design to show how an integrated ship design is developed, starting with a statement of owner's requirements.
Course 2. Marine engineering by Kevin Prince (Gibbs & Cox, Inc.). This course reviews marine engineering functional requirements for ship design, addressing ship design phases, systems engineering analyses and integration, propulsion plant design, electrical generation plant design, and auxiliary system pump selection.
Course 3. Sailing yacht performance analysis by Drs. Robert Beck and Kevin Maki (University of Michigan). This course will focus on different analyses of the forces and moments on a sailing yacht, airfoil theory, keel and rudder design, sail design, model testing, and the use of computers in yacht performance analysis.
Four new panel discussions have been added to this year's expo schedule: Electric Ships - A Shipbuilders Perspective; Ocean Energy - How Will It Be Developed?; Unmanned and Autonomous Ships of the Future; and Efficient Shipping in the Greenhouse Gas Era. Panels include the presentation of up to three papers and a format to encourage an active discussion of the subject matter.
