Spotlight on Patagonia’s marine potential during Blue Economy Days

The Industrial Chamber of Patagonia (CIMA Patagonia) is set to host the inaugural Blue Economy Days in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, from 4–6 September. This event marks a significant step towards harnessing Patagonia’s vast marine resources as Argentina begins to explore its oceanic potential. With the participation of international and national experts, the event aims to promote sustainable industrial development in this ecologically sensitive region, fostering collaboration between industry, science and environmental stewardship.

Historically, Argentina has primarily focused on industrial and agricultural activities, with only a few small industries and businesses connected to the ocean. This is particularly surprising given that Argentina boasts one of the largest continental shelves in the world. Patagonia is renowned for its rich marine biodiversity, ecotourism opportunities and proximity to Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. The Peninsula de Valdés in particular attracts thousands of tourists each year for its whale-watching activities. Southern Right whales migrate to this region to mate and give birth from June to December, often coming within touching distance of the coast.

Unique ecological characteristics

The country aims to regain legal and economic stability, and in doing so position itself as one of the most promising nations in South America. The region is rich in energy resources and minerals, both onshore and offshore, and has a robust agricultural and agro-industrial sector. This sets the stage for natural industrial development in Patagonia. However, given the region’s unique ecological characteristics and sensitivity to environmental change, it is crucial that industrial growth occurs in close collaboration with scientific research and a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.

CIMA is hosting the Blue Economy Days in partnership with the German/South American marine technology manufacturer Mariscope. The event aims to foster dialogue and exchange among all stakeholders interested in the blue economy. While the initiative is driven by a private organization, it seeks to include participants from various sectors, including private enterprises, industry representatives, scientists, NGOs and government organizations. The event will feature both international and national speakers who will provide insights into current and future developments, investment opportunities, political plans, projects and funding options for both large enterprises and small to medium-sized businesses.
