Students Unable to attend Diploma Award Ceremony because of New Jobs - 20/05/2019

On 10 May 2019, the Hydrographic Institute held the diploma and badge award ceremony for the Specialization Course in Hydrography (edition 2017/2018). This course was completed by four officers of the Portuguese Navy, one officer of the Navy of Morocco and two civilians with Brazilian and Italian nationalities. Two civilian students were unable to be present at the ceremony because, after the end of the course, they quickly found jobs. Both are already working in the international hydrographic industry, one in Scotland at Fugro GB and the other in Australia at Guardian Geomatics PTY. LTD.

The Specialization Course in Hydrography, taught by the School of Hydrography and Oceanography of the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute, is a course recognized with the category A since 1983. Its recognition was renewed in 2017 by the FIG-IHO-ICA International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers.

Military and civilian students

This course, created to provide hydrographic education to officers of the Portuguese Navy, may also be attended by military personnel from other friendly nations and by civilians from Portugal and other countries.

Since 1977 the School of Hydrography and Oceanography has provided hydrographic training to 251 students, with about 30% (77) of the students coming from other countries. Being taught in Portuguese, the students of the African Portuguese-speaking countries represent the great majority. However, its scope and contribution to the worldwide training in hydrography exceed the linguistic limits, attracting some students from countries whose official language is not Portuguese - as was the case in this most recent edition of the course.
