SubC Imaging brings 4K capability to legacy ROVs with Rayfin Uplink

In a move set to resonate across the subsea, energy and marine research sectors, SubC Imaging has unveiled the Rayfin Uplink, a new camera solution designed to bring modern digital imaging to legacy and analogue remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) – without the expense of major upgrades or fibre-optic rewiring.

At its core, the Rayfin Uplink creates a direct digital connection between a Rayfin Uplink ROV camera and a topside control unit or laptop. The system delivers real-time HD and 4K imaging over the coax or twisted-pair cabling already present in many existing ROV tethers, eliminating the need for ethernet and making high-quality visuals accessible to long-serving fleets.

Capturing more data

Beyond its imaging capabilities, the Rayfin Uplink features a built-in single-channel DVR+ for onboard recording, with an option to upgrade to multi-channel functionality. This enables operators to capture more data with the same camera hardware, improving documentation workflows and strengthening inspection quality.

Designed for teams in energy, marine science, environmental monitoring, defence and subsea engineering, the Rayfin Uplink offers a practical upgrade path for organizations seeking higher-quality imaging without replacing vehicles or overhauling infrastructure. By using the cabling and power configurations already present in older systems, it brings modern capability to a broad range of ROVs still active in the field.

With the Rayfin Uplink, operators can record, save and review digital video and still images topside – streamlining workflows while bringing decades-old assets into the 4K era.

Rapid pace of innovation

The launch also highlights the rapid pace of innovation in underwater imaging, where higher resolutions, compact systems and more efficient workflows are reshaping industry expectations. By enabling 4K capability on legacy vehicles, SubC Imaging is helping bridge the gap between past investments and future operational needs.

As long-standing specialists in the ocean science market, SubC Imaging has built its business around the needs of researchers and operators in the field. For more than a decade, the company has collaborated closely with marine scientists to guide product design and performance, while supporting the community through industry events and partnerships. That ongoing dialogue directly shaped the development of the Rayfin Uplink, responding to a clear demand for higher-quality imaging without the cost and downtime of full ROV replacement.
