US Navy Side Scan Sonar Training Contract

Black Laser Learning was recently awarded a contract from United States Space and Naval Warfare Command (SPAWAR) to provide advanced side scan sonar image interpretation training. Phase I of the two-phase contract includes on site instruction. The field instruction was completed in January of this year.

Phase II of the contract is a complete revision of The Sonar Operator’s Not In the Manual Guide To Side Scan Sonar and Image Interpretation specific to the military mission. The training on DVD will allow units in route to quickly refresh themselves on critical details as well as allow new recruits to acquire basic knowledge between regularly scheduled training iterations. This side scan sonar training guide will only be available to military. The military version of side scan sonar interpretation is the fifth in the Not In the Manual Guides series. The most recent addition was the Not In the Manual Guide to Subbottom Profilers released in the Spring of 2006.

The new military training program will be hosted by Vincent Capone who has over 20 years sonar and hydrographic experience along with a Master’s Degree in Marine Science. Vince has been side scan sonar instructor for the US Navy, US Army Corps of Engineers, US EPA, Korean Navy, and Israeli Navy, Irish Navy as well as numerous commercial groups. In addition to teaching sonar, Vince has also taught at Dowling College and the Isle of Shoals Marine Laboratory.
