UXO Survey Workshop: Call for Abstracts

The Hydrographic Society UK (THS UK) is to organise a one-day seminar and accompanying table-top exhibition focusing on Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Surveys on 19 June 2015. A separately ticketed social event on the evening of Thursday 18 June will enable delegates and members to meet, relax, eat, drink and celebrate World Hydrography Day. Expressions of interest from potential speakers are now being sought. Abstracts for presentations addressing any of the following themes related to maritime UXO and ERW will be especially welcome.

Abstracts should be a maximum of 250 words in length and must be accompanied by a biography and photograph of each author. All abstracts must be submitted to [email protected] by 30 April 2015. Successful authors will be notified by 22 May; on receipt of acceptance they must confirm their intent to present. Until the programme is confirmed all potential authors must ensure their availability on 19 June.

Presentations will be selected based on relevance to the seminar theme, originality and quality.

Presenters may discuss case studies and genuine UXO survey operations, hazard identification and reduction, equipment and sensor technology, survey methodologies, data processing, modelling, depth of burial algorithms and the special challenges associated with ground-truthing, discrimination, classification and UXO clearance techniques.

Presentations considering new developments and techniques and those featuring case studies would be of particular interest to the target audience.

Focus on Marine Environment

Unexploded ordnance (UXO) are defined as explosive munitions which haven't yet been set off. UXO may already have been fired, dropped or launched, but failed to detonate as intended and therefore still poses a risk, possibly decades after deployment. In addition, the seminar may also consider explosive remnants of war (ERW) which have subsequently entered the marine environment. The seminar will focus on the marine environment including rivers and lakes, nearshore and offshore.

Participants are expected to be drawn from a range of marine sectors including Offshore Oil & Gas, Marine Renewables, Port and Terminal Civil Engineering and Dredging. The event is expected to be of interest to the hydrographic community, engineers and insurers.

Full details about exhibition and sponsorship opportunities, delegate registration and the associated social event will be published shortly.
