World Hydrography Day Activities

This year, the first World Hydrography Day will take place on Wednesday, 21 June. In several countries, there are activities to highlight the work of hydrographers.

  • The UKHO is hosting a drinks reception with guest speaker Polar explorer Pen Hadow followed by a gala dinner. The event will involve a link-up with Royal Navy survey ship HMS Scott in America and a live link to the IHO in Monaco and other member states. There will be exhibitions in Leith (Scotland), Plymouth, Greenwich and Taunton (Somerset).

  • To mark the World Hydrography Day, National Hydrographic Office of Sri Lanka has organised a seminar on the theme of "Towards Safer Seas & Coastal Habitats; Sustainable Development Planning for Future".

  • The French Hydrographic Service (information in French) organises congresses with an exhibition in Paris and Brest around the major theme of safe navigation. Attendees are requested to register before 16 June.

  • The Netherlands Hydrographic Service will celebrate the Grand Opening of their new headquarters in The Hague.

  • In Australia, the World Hydrography Day will be lauched by a government Minister, the Chief of Navy, The Hydrographer of Australia and other Parliamentarians. This will be followed by an information seminar featuring significant hydrographic activities being undertaken in Australia. In the evening, the Australasian Hydrographic Society have organised an Explorers' Ball and Awards Dinner.

  • For the Periskal Group, supplier of electronic maritime navigation systems and surveying systems for inland navigation, World Hydrography Day is an incentive to sail with three-master 'De Eendracht' on the North Sea and to launch new products.
